About International Events

The ESAA fields National teams in the Schools International Athletics Board (SIAB) competitions which involve England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. These take place in Cross-Country and Track and Field. There is also an International Indoor Pentathlon hosted annually by Scotland, normally at the beginning of December.

International School Sport Federation Events are held in Cross-Country and Track and Field. There are international competitions for a select team, usually selected by ESAA at the World Schools’ Cross-Country competition) and the World Schools’ Athletics Competition (held every two years). Individual schools can also be invited by ESAA to nominate a schools’ team for some ISF events.

What international events exist?

The ESAA fields National teams in the Schools International Athletics Board (SIAB) competitions which involve England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Cross Country teams are selected at Junior (Under 15) and Intermediate (Under 17) levels. The Track & Field team is for Intermediates only (Under 17).

Teams are selected during and immediately after the National Championships, and the successful athletes are informed at those Championships.

Combined Events teams are usually selected for the Indoor Combined Events Pentathlon from the ESAA Combined Events Championships where four athletes in the Junior and Intermediate age groups compete.

How many teams can ESAA invite to ISF events?

ESAA can also invite up to three individual school teams to participate in these events.

Can schools directly enter these competitions?

Schools cannot directly enter international competitions.

Schools are only able to directly enter the Track and Field School’s Cup and Cross-Country Cup.

How do I get selected to compete in the ESAA Championships?

Athletes are selected for their county Schools’ team to participate in the ESAA Track and Field Championships, the Combined Events and Race-Walking Championships and the Cross-Country Championships. There is a maximum size for county teams:

Group A – 70 athletes

Group B – 40 athletes

Group C – 32 athletes

Group D – 24 athletes
