Cross Country Schools Cup 2024

Juniors: Under 14: normally Years 7/8 Inters: Under 16: normally Years 9/10 Seniors: Under 19: normally Years 11/12/13 – Ages at 31st August 2024 (End of 2023-24 School Year) – Teams of 6 runners with best 4 scoring – Local County based Preliminary Rounds are held in September/October 2024. Nine Regional Finals will be held during the week commencing 4th November, 2024 – The National Finals will be hosted by The Grammar School at Leeds, LS17 9NA (for SATNAV) on Saturday 7th December 2024 – first race at 12:15pm.
All schools teams that have qualified for the CUP FINAL at GSAL on Saturday, 7th December, will receive information as soon as all results have been processed. Details of start times and race distances can be viewed below.

Juniors are normally years 7 & 8, and Intermediates are normally years 9 & 10. Don’t forget that the years advance by one during the summer holidays, so when entering before the summer holidays you will be looking to take the current years 6 & 7, and 8 & 9 to the competition starting in October, ie. U14 must be under 14 on 31st August 2022, and U16 must be under 16 on 31st August 2022.

The Cup Final is normally held on the first Saturday in December and this year is being hosted by the Grammar School at Leeds. Anyone who would like to offer to stage the CUP FINAL in the future should contact the ESAA Cross Country Cup Coordinators, via the Contact-Us page.

ESAA offer the following competitions with separate races for Girls and Boys in each age group: 

  • Juniors (under 14) – over 12 and under 14 years of age (normally school years 7 & 8)
  • Intermediates (under 16) – over 14 and under 16 years of age  (normally school years 9 & 10)
  • Seniors (under 19) – over 16 and under 19 years of age  (normally school years 11, 12 & 13 )

Age groups work on actual age as at midnight 31st August at the end of the current school year, not on their current school year group, teachers need to be aware of any pupils who are in the ‘wrong’ year for their actual age.

For the XC Cup competitions held between September and December 2024 the ages are as at midnight 31st August 2024. 

Yes, this is very much an inter-school competition. Only individual schools can enter teams in the Cross Country Cup. Entries must be submitted by the closing dates identified in the competitions area of the website. This is not a competition for club based teams or individual athlete entry. A minimum of four school runners are required for each team.

Yes. The ESAA benefits from registration with England Athletics which requires school teams to be accompanied at ESAA events by a teacher from that school. The relevant UK Athletics Insurance Documents can be downloaded and viewed here
